Selling the Lake Wylie Lifestyle

Lake Wylie was initially created in 1904 by a dam built on the Catawba River near Fort Mill, SC. The dam was later rebuilt in 1924 and the lake's surface expanded. While most of Lake Wylie lies in South Carolina in York County, the upper peninsula of the lake stretches into North Carolina in Southwest Mecklenburg County and Southern Gaston County.

 

This 13,000-acre lake has 325 miles of shoreline and is ideal for boating, fishing, water skiing and residential living. Neighbors appreciate Lake Wylie for being such an active lakeside community.

 

“There is always something to do,” says Terra Patterson, real estate agent out of Helen Adams Realty’s Fort Mill office and Lake Wylie resident. “One of our favorite things is to hop on our golf cart and go to the clubhouse for dinner as a family. There is just something that makes you feel like you are on vacation!”

 

Because of its waterfront convenience, Lake Wylie offers many outdoor events throughout the year. Some of the area must-dos are the Fourth of July Boat Parade, the Holiday Boat Parade, and Christmas by the lake. These celebrations feature beautiful displays of fireworks, lights, holiday décor, and lakefront real estate.

 

“Tega Cay is the place to be for the 4th of July holiday,” says Patterson. “There is a big land parade in the morning, followed by a boat parade and a ski show, and it all ends with a firework show!”

 

Popular nearby attractions include outdoor activity venues, entertainment sites, and historical places. Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is a nature museum with gardens, fountains, tropical plants and orchids, and nature trails. Also nearby is Muddy River Distillery, a local hotspot that produces and distributes its own local rum. Get a peek behind the curtain with a tour and tasting offered on the weekends. If you live in or visit the Lake Wylie area, a trip to the US National Whitewater Center is a necessity! The popular activity center promotes outdoor recreation whether it is through festivals, races, water-based sports and games, or bike trails.

 

Lake Wylie is easily accessible off most major highways and is conveniently located near Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The I-485 loop, in addition to I-77, I-85 and SC 49 provide easy access to the leafy neighborhoods, lakefront homes and condos. Newer developments like Audubon, The Sanctuary, and The Palisades offer high-end homes with wooded lots and luxurious waterfront clubhouse amenities.

 

As of May 2019, the average home price for Lake Wylie is approximately $372,000, as provided by CRRA. Development in this area continues to boom, and commute time to center city Charlotte ranges from 20 to 35 minutes, making Lake Wylie a desirable place to live.
